World News – Living With Fear and Uncertainty


World news is the jargon for news about events that go beyond the borders of a single country or that are of global interest. In the United States, it’s a category that includes foreign affairs and international policy, but also news about wars in which our troops are fighting, or multilateral meetings such as the COP28 climate talks.

Whether in a refugee camp in Gaza, or an Israeli hospital, people describe living with fear and uncertainty. But a few brave voices tell their stories of hope, and why they have made this choice to continue on.

Israel’s tanks are pushing into the heart of Khan Younis, a large town in the southern part of the Gaza Strip. It’s the biggest operation yet in a war that has already lasted more than three weeks. WORLD correspondent Olivia Chan takes us there, where she finds that local residents are bracing themselves for days or even months of heavy fighting.

Amid escalating violence, the UN says it is “very concerned” about reports that Palestinians are suffering massive losses. The UN’s envoy to the region, Christine van Niekerk, says the plight of those fleeing the conflict is “a matter of urgency.”
